We found a stranded boat near the middle of Cass lake, near Star Island. A group of guys had engine failure and were attempting to swim their craft to shore.
We strapped them to our canoe and towed them in.
Dan and his friends were extremely thankful; plus, it was some good exercise.
Follow the progress of two adventurers, Mississippi River bound. Starting June 1st, 2012, Luke Taylor and Craig Loss paddled 2300 miles down the United States' most legendary river - from its start at lake Itasca, Minnesota, to its last stop, New Orleans, Louisiana. Through this feat of endurance, they raised over $6,000 for Local Livelihood, a small, inspiring community-based nonprofit.

Rain Delay
The morning and early afternoon were hot as we paddled out of Lake Cass and portaged around Knutson Dam.
Saw an amazing burned down bridge, which were still wondering about...
We made our way downriver to Lake Winnibigoshish and are currently being delayed by rain.
Waiting for weather to improve before we make any more moves.

Wear and Tear
Things are going to plan so far, our gear is holding up nicely.
Our bodies on the other hand, not so much. Bug bites, cuts, scrapes, blisters and the heat of the sun are all challenging us.
Tonight we camp at Star Island in Cass Lake, MN. Local lore tells us that it's one of the few islands in the world with its own lake, Lake Windigo.
Tomorrow we have our longest paddle yet planned. After honing our paddling skills for the past 6 days, we are looking to paddle about 30 miles to the east side of Lake Winnibigoshish to the Tamarack Point Campground.
Time to rest...

Progress
We are pulling the future into the present one paddle-full of water at a time.
With a good foundation of organization and persistence, Craig and I engage the local river community.
The campsites we have been staying at are great. Though very remote, they are very well kept and include some ice amenities.

Lake Bemibji
Resupplied, we are set for a few more days on the river.
Tonight, we stop at stump lake campsite, a few miles past lake Bemibji. Tomorrow, we camp on star island.
Canoeing the lakes has been a challenge. The wind is stronger, and it's tough to track progress.

Day 5 - cruising
We should be picking up ifood and supplies in Bemidji within the hour.
Sleeping is getting very easy. We are both feeling strong, and making good time.
Jesse and Neil, a couple of awesome Minnesotans, shared a recent campsite with us. Neil shared a couple good lures; Jesse taught us how to make rejuvenating spruce tea.
